Kratom and its alkaloids — including 7-hydroxymitragynine — act on opioid receptors. Adult brains are fully developed; adolescent brains are not, and psychoactive compounds carry different risks there. The kratom community’s own model legislation, the Kratom Consumer Protection Act, sets the floor at 21. We follow that standard voluntarily, in every state, even where the law allows younger buyers.

A growing number of states now require 21+ for kratom sales — among them many that adopted KCPA-style rules.
